Influenza A virus in swine (IAV-S) is an ever-present health challenge in pigs. Studies continue to show significant economic impact of IAV-S alone or in combination with PRRS infections, due to mortality and reduced weight gain. IAV-S is endemic in the majority of U.S. swine herds, but controlling this pathogen has been difficult. In this webinar, Dr. Montserrat Torremorell of the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine and Dr. Clayton Johnson of Carthage Veterinary Services will share knowledge and experiences about IAV-S and IAV-S control.

The first part of this webinar, presented by Dr. Torremorell, serves to gather the body of evidence regarding the complexity of IAV-S; understand co-circulation of IAV-S and the role it plays in contemporary U.S. farms, and review IAV-S transmission, including the role pigs and people play in IAV-S maintenance in sow farms. Dr. Johnson will continue the discussion with his experiences on the application of IAV-S control at the sow level—what interventions have been successful and how have risks of transmission been minimized for successful IAV-S control in sow farms? Can we eliminate IAV-S from endemic farrowing rooms?

Specifically, participants will learn:
  • What and how sub-populations harbor IAV-S and maintain IAV-S circulation in sow farms
  • What production practices can maintain IAV-S in sow herds
  • Why IAV-S is complex and difficult to control
  • Successful practices used to control IAV-S at the sow herd level

Presenters:

Montserrat Torremorell, DVM, PhD
University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine

Dr. Montserrat Torremorell is an Associate Professor in the Department of Veterinary Population Medicine at the College of Veterinary Medicine. She teaches veterinary medicine to both DVM and graduate students and is passionate about helping producers and veterinarians apply science to control diseases. She is also the director of the Swine Disease Eradication Center at the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Minnesota.

Dr. Torremorell currently conducts research of economically significant swine diseases focusing on the transmission, control and elimination of influenza and PRRS infections in pigs. She also researches biosecurity technologies with applicability to prevent and mitigate airborne infections in pigs.
