Over the past decade, the sentiment about swine manure has changed. The perceived value of manure has increased and many growers know that manure can reduce commercial fertilizer bills, add micronutrients to soil and improve soil health. However, manure application timing and rates are still areas of concern.

Recent research developed by Iowa State University shows that later application timing of manure combined with the use of a nitrogen stabilizer, Instinct® nitrogen stabilizer, can have a significant impact on yield — approximately an 18-bushel average increase over the two years of the ISU study in Nashua, Iowa. In this fact-filled webinar, Dr. Dan Andersen, Iowa State University, and Kenny Johnson, CCA, Corteva Agriscience™, explain the impact of various cropping and nutrient management systems on crop yield and drainage water quality.

Iowa State University

Dr. Andersen is an Associate Professor and Extension Specialist at Iowa State University in the Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering Department. His research interests are in the areas of manure management and water quality, which involve manure treatment and utilization, nutrient management planning, field and farm scale soil and water quality monitoring and modeling, and economic evaluation of agricultural practice alternatives. His extension program specifically focuses on manure treatment, management, and utilization.

The goal of Dr. Andersen's research and extension work at Iowa State University is to improve soil, water and air quality by promoting the development and implementation of agricultural manure management systems that are environmentally sustainable, economically feasible, and socially acceptable through the use of extension programming, state-wide training and a mix of fundamental and applied research.
